abstract |
Described are random sequence oligonucleotides with antiviral activity and their use as antiviral agents. In many cases, the oligonucleotide has a nucleotide length greater than 40 and includes chemical modifications such as, for example, a modified internucleotide linkage and a modification at the 2 ′ position of the ribose moiety. Also described are uses for the prevention or treatment of viral infections in humans and animals, and use for the prevention or treatment of cancers caused by human and animal oncoviruses. These uses typically provide a pharmacologically acceptable therapeutically effective amount of at least one oligonucleotide that acts in a sequence-independent manner on a human or animal in need of such treatment.
