The present invention provides an asymmetric hydrogenation of an α, β-unsaturated carbonyl compound in the presence of an optically active transition metal catalyst that is soluble in the reaction mixture and has at least one carbon monoxide ligand. The present invention relates to a method for producing an optically active carbonyl compound. In particular, the present invention relates to a method for producing an optically active aldehyde or ketone (particularly citronellal) by asymmetric hydrogenation of the corresponding optically active α, β-unsaturated aldehyde or ketone.
