titleOfInvention Apparatus and method for adaptive digital locking and soft evaluation of data symbols in a wireless digital communication system
abstract The data communication system detects the synchronization signal and the start pattern from the sequentially encoded digital data stream transmitted to the receiver and extracts data symbols. The communication system transmission apparatus includes a frame formatter that generates a frame of symbols of sequentially encoded data to be transmitted. The communication system includes a receiving device that communicates with a transmitting device to obtain a series of symbols. The receiving device has a register that communicates with the sample and hold circuit and receives a series of symbols comprised of a plurality of bits obtained from sampling the signal received at the sample and hold circuit. When receiving multiple bits, the position of the bits in the register is adjusted. A symbol evaluator communicates with the register and examines the plurality of bits to determine a symbol value for the plurality of bits. The symbol value includes a synchronization value, a start value, and a data value. The synchronization value indicates a synchronization pattern indicating signal timing. The start value indicates the start pattern at the beginning of the data message. The data value indicates at least one of the dual bit data symbols of the data message. The symbol value is the most probable value of all possible symbol values.
