abstract The present invention provides a protein encoded by the ATP2B gene and discloses different expression of the gene encoding the ATP2B protein in specific brain regions of Alzheimer's disease patients. Based on this discovery, the present invention provides a method for diagnosing or predicting Alzheimer's disease in a subject, or for determining whether a subject has an increased risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. Furthermore, the present invention provides a therapeutic and prophylactic method for treating or preventing Alzheimer's disease and related neurodegenerative diseases using the ATP2B gene and its corresponding gene product. Also disclosed are methods of screening for modulators of neurodegenerative diseases.
