The present invention relates to a polyhydroxylated aliphatic hydrocarbon by contacting a polyhydroxylated aliphatic hydrocarbon or an ester starting material thereof with a source of superatmospheric partial pressure of hydrogen chloride for a sufficient time at a sufficient temperature. Or a method for converting their esters to chlorohydrin, wherein such contacting step is carried out without substantially removing water to produce the desired chlorohydrin product, or It relates to a process in which product groups can be produced in high yield without substantial production of undesired perchlorinated by-products. In addition, certain catalysts of the present invention can be used in the process of the present invention with improved results at superatmospheric, atmospheric and subatmospheric pressure conditions. |
