A method of burning coal or other carbonaceous fuel that captures sulfur and other unwanted compounds after the combustion phase and retains them in a non-reactive ceramic-like form. The method comprises adding a multi-element alkali powder and / or an adsorbent, preferably containing oxidizing anions (eg nitrate and nitrite ions, preferably calcium based). In various embodiments, the improved material, when applied in a multi-element containing composite powder and / or liquid, results in higher sulfur capture than would otherwise be achieved based on the individual of the material . In a preferred embodiment, the adsorbent contains elements that minimize or reduce the melting point of ash. This reduces ash agglomeration and toughness, resulting in reduced ash accumulation on the boiler and better thermal conduction. |
