titleOfInvention | How to measure cancer susceptibility |
abstract | An individual's susceptibility to cancer is assessed based on the individual's cellular response to a mutagenic agent such as radiation. The level of growth suppression marker is measured before and after the individual cells are exposed to the mutagenic agent. An individual's susceptibility to cancer as a result of a mutagenic agent correlates with the degree to which growth inhibitory markers are induced by exposure to the agent. Also disclosed is a method for assessing the cancer preventive effect of a compound such as a vitamin or food extract in an individual. Cells from the individual are incubated in vitro with at least one compound, or the compound is administered directly to the individual, and then the incubated cells as well as a portion of the unincubated cells, such as ionizing radiation Exposure to mutagenic agents. Subsequently, the level of growth inhibitory marker in cells incubated with the compound and exposed to the mutagenic agent is compared to the level in unincubated cells exposed to the agent. The cancer-preventing effect of the compound correlates with higher marker levels in the incubated cells. |
