abstract A method for rapidly and simultaneously identifying the presence of a gene encoding a protein having an activity related to biotechnology present in a microbiological sample is provided. An array of nucleotide sequences and a method of using the array in the identification of the genes. In particular, genes encoding proteins involved in biofilm formation, CO2 fixation, energy metabolism, chemotaxis and motility, iron oxidation, nitrogen metabolism, sulfur assimilation, and oxidation / reduction of sulfide compounds. The array of nucleotide sequences is provided as a useful tool in biotechnology in all cases requiring an assessment of the characteristics of the microbiological community. [Selection figure] None
