titleOfInvention Apparatus and method for eliminating arc flash
abstract An arc flash is prevented and reduced. An arc crowbar with electrodes (34A, 34B, 34C) separated by a gap (35) in a protective case. Each electrode is connected to an electrically different conductor of the circuit. The sensors (42, 44) detect the arc flash condition of the circuit and signal the trigger circuit (52) to send an electrical pulse to the arc trigger device (36) in the gap of the arc crowbar. The trigger device ionizes a portion of the gas between the electrodes and initiates a protective arc between the electrodes that absorbs energy from the power circuit and trips the circuit breaker, eliminating an arc flash condition. The trigger device may be a plasma gun, and in particular may inject a plasma of ablated material into the gap. The sensor may signal the circuit breaker (26) to open in the power circuit.
