A transflective IPS system in which a retardation plate is incorporated in a reflective display unit, which realizes a wide viewing angle equivalent to that of a transmissive IPS system and prevents peeling of a sealing material. A material for forming a retardation layer formed on a main surface of a first substrate is applied to the display area AR side with respect to a region of a sealing material.
