An image display device having a thin film electron source array and a phosphor screen, which has an electron acceleration layer made of an insulator or a semiconductor between the lower electrode and the upper electrode, and emits electrons from the upper electrode. Suppresses the decrease in electron emission characteristics due to the increase in work function due to deposits. An element belonging to Group 8 or Group Ib, or a laminated film or alloy film thereof, is used as an upper electrode component of a thin film electron source, and an amount of S component or the like adhering to the upper electrode is converted into an element.
