From a novel microorganism and a novel enzyme utilizing the racemic or optically active isomer form of propionamide as the sole nitrogen source, and (S)-or (R) -3 from trifluoroaceto-acetate A method for producing 3,3,3-trifluoro-2-hydroxy-2-methylpropionic acid is provided. An optically active propionic acid is obtained by obtaining a microorganism that utilizes a racemic form of propionamide or an optically active isomer form thereof as a sole nitrogen source and allowing the microorganism to act on the racemic form of propionic acid amide.
