abstract The present invention provides an improved process for the preparation of S-pantoprazole. 5-Difluoromethoxy-1-benzimidazole-2-thiol is reacted with 2-chloromethyl-3,4-dimethoxypyridine in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst and a base in a solvent to give 5- (difluoro Methoxy) -2-(((3,4-dimethoxypyrrolidin-2-yl) methyl) thio) -1H-benzimidazole is obtained. This is stereoselectively oxidized in situ in the presence of a stereoselective reaction reagent, oxidant and base to give S-pantoprazole, which is treated with an alkaline solution as necessary to give pure S- An improved method for the preparation of S-pantoprazole to obtain pantoprazole. S-pantoprazole is reacted with a base in a solvent to obtain a pharmaceutically acceptable stable salt of S-pantoprazole or a hydrate thereof. [Selection figure] None
