abstract An elliptically polarizing plate and a vertical alignment type liquid crystal display device excellent in viewing angle characteristics are provided. At least a first polarizing plate, a first optical anisotropic layer, a second optical anisotropic layer, a third optical anisotropic layer, and a fourth optical anisotropic layer are laminated in this order. The first optically anisotropic layer satisfies [1], the second optically anisotropic layer satisfies [2] and [3], and has a third optical anisotropy. An elliptically polarizing plate in which the layer satisfies [4] and the fourth optically anisotropic layer satisfies [5] and [6]. [1] 50 ≦ Re1 ≦ 300 [2] 0 ≦ Re2 ≦ 20 [3] −500 ≦ Rth2 ≦ −30 [4] 100 ≦ Re3 ≦ 180 [5] 0 ≦ Re4 ≦ 20 [6] 100 ≦ Rth4 ≦ 400 (Here, Re means an in-plane retardation value of each optically anisotropic layer, and Rth means a retardation value in the thickness direction of each optically anisotropic layer.)
