A novel peptide capable of binding to uPAR and inhibiting the binding of integrin and vitronectin and a nucleic acid sequence encoding the peptide are provided. Novel peptides that bind to uPAR and can inhibit integrin and vitronectin binding are described. Also provided are nucleic acid sequences encoding novel peptides. Methods are described for screening small molecules, other peptides, or peptoids that mimic the antagonistic function of the peptides of the invention. The present invention relates to disorders characterized by up-regulation of uPA and uPAR, as well as applications in the design of therapeutics to treat cancer and chronic inflammation, cell migration or uPAR: integrin binding interactions, and diagnosis for these disorders Have a typical application.
