abstract An object of the present invention is to suppress wear of the probe tip or the upper surface of a recording medium during information reproduction. A recording / reproducing apparatus includes a recording medium including a lower electrode layer, a recording layer provided on the lower electrode layer, and having a resistance state changed by an applied current pulse, and a recording medium. When the potential difference between the probe 11 that scans and applies a current pulse to the recording medium 14 and the probe 11 and the lower electrode layer 16 is zero, the probe 11 is supported so as to be spaced from the upper surface of the recording medium 14. And a reproducing circuit 33 for applying a reproducing voltage between the probe 11 and the lower electrode layer 16 when reproducing information from the recording medium 14. [Selection] Figure 6
