abstract | A round and spherical titanium dioxide polishing medium and a method of making the medium are disclosed. The polishing media is effective to remove the titanium dioxide stack on the walls of the titanium dioxide reaction vessel. The method consists of forming unfired titanium dioxide pellets by mixing commercially available titanium dioxide powder, water, and surfactant in a high strength mixer. In a high strength mixer, approximately round and spherical green pellets are made, subsequently sized and sintered in a kiln to form round and spherical titanium dioxide sintered pellets suitable as polishing media. The high strength mixer allows the operator to closely control the size and shape of the pellets during the molding process so that approximately round and spherical green pellets are produced. Sintered titanium dioxide pellets are substantially round and spherical in shape, which significantly reduces the wear on the reaction vessel walls. Furthermore, since the pellets do not wear themselves, they do not contaminate the titanium dioxide product and can even be reworked into a round and spherical abrasive medium. |
