abstract | Described is a novel process suitable for producing quaternary ammonium compounds having selected anions that may be useful in wood preservative formulations. In this method, a trialkylamine is reacted with an alkyl bromide to form a quaternary tetraalkylammonium bromide salt, and the quaternary tetraalkylammonium bromide salt is converted to a quaternary hydroxide using an ion exchange resin. Converting to a quaternary tetraalkylammonium salt and converting the quaternary tetraalkylammonium hydroxide salt to a quaternary tetraalkylammonium salt of the selected anion. |
