The present invention relates to a composition for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases comprising as an active ingredient an extract of sputum or an abietane diterpenoid compound or a terpenoid compound isolated therefrom. [Solution] The sputum extract of the present invention, or an abietane diterpenoid compound or terpenoid compound separated therefrom, not only has excellent antioxidant activity against low density lipid proteins, but also effectively suppresses activity against ACAT. In addition, the sputum extract of the present invention reduces serum LDL and simultaneously lowers blood cholesterol. Therefore, the composition of the present invention can be usefully used for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases such as hyperlipidemia and arteriosclerosis induced by synthesis and accumulation of cholesteryl esters.
