titleOfInvention Apparatus and method for adjusting a light beam in an optical device with a photonic crystal lattice
abstract An apparatus and method for adjusting a light beam by adjusting a photonic band gap of a photonic crystal lattice. According to one embodiment of the present invention, an apparatus includes a photonic crystal lattice in a first semiconductor material. The first semiconductor material 103 has a plurality of holes 107 defined therein. The plurality of holes are periodically arranged in the first semiconductor material 103 with a hole pitch and a hole radius defining a photonic crystal lattice. The apparatus also includes a second semiconductor material region 419 disposed proximate to and insulated from the inner surfaces of each of the plurality of holes 107 defined in the first semiconductor material 103, and the semiconductor material region. Charge adjustment region adjusted within 419. The light beam is directed through the photonic crystal lattice and tuned in response to the adjusted effective photonic band gap of the photonic crystal lattice. The effective photonic band gap is adjusted in response to the charge adjustment region. [Selection] Figure 4B
