titleOfInvention | Polyhydropolyborate as polymerization catalyst |
abstract | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a melt polymerization method for polycarbonate capable of achieving a high polymerization rate while minimizing the amount of fleece product produced. The present invention relates to a synthesis method in which a polycarbonate is produced by contacting one or more diaryl carbonates with one or more dihydroxy aromatic compounds under melt polymerization conditions in the presence of a transesterification catalyst. The transesterification catalyst used in the process of the present invention is a combination of polyhydropolyborate with a tetraalkylammonium or tetraalkylphosphonium compound that acts as a cocatalyst. The transesterification catalyst used in the process of the present invention provides a polycarbonate with a reduced level of Fries rearrangement product compared to conventional catalysts such as a combination of sodium hydroxide and tetramethylammonium hydroxide cocatalyst.
