The present invention provides a lotus extract for treating depression, a method for producing the same, a pharmaceutical composition containing the same, and a health food. The lotus meat extract of the present invention is produced by extracting lotus meat with alcohol or an alcohol aqueous solution. The above-mentioned lotus meat extract exhibits a strong anti-depressive activity by animal behavioral, biochemical and molecular biological methods, and exhibits a normal immune response by suppressing the side effects of immunosuppression due to depression. Since the safety of reducing the side effects of existing antidepressants is ensured, the composition can be usefully used as a composition for treating depression and a health food.
