The present invention relates generally to the field of tissue modification, and in particular, but not exclusively, to a method of modifying cells of the eye, particularly corneal tissue, to produce immunoglobulins or immunoglobulin fragments. The present invention also relates to modified ocular cells and tissues, expression vectors utilized in the above methods, xenogeneic and allogeneic transplantation methods using the modified tissues, and methods of treating eye diseases and disorders. According to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, a method of modifying cells of ocular tissue to produce a subject immunoglobulin or immunoglobulin fragment for a period of time sufficient to allow transfection to occur. There is provided a method comprising exposing ocular tissue to a concentration effective for transfection of an expression vector comprising a nucleotide sequence encoding a globulin fragment, wherein the cells of the ocular tissue produce immunoglobulins or immunoglobulin fragments. . |
