An apparatus for sensing analyte concentration, particularly glucose concentration, in vivo or in vitro is disclosed. An optical conduit, preferably an optical fiber, has an optical system at its proximal end. The sensing element includes at least one binding protein attached to the distal end of the light conduit and adapted to bind to at least one target analyte. The sensing element further includes at least one reporter group whose luminescence changes with changes in analyte concentration. Optionally, the sensing element includes a reference group having luminescent properties that are substantially unchanged by changes in analyte concentration. |
