abstract |
The present invention provides silver oxide particles having an average diameter of 100 nm or less that can be transported in a stable and dry powder state. The surface of the silver oxide particles is coated with a very thin layer of a surfactant such as a fatty acid. Nano-sized silver oxide particles according to the present invention are preferably formed by adding a strong base to a mixture containing an aqueous silver salt solution and a surfactant dissolved in an organic solvent that is at least partially water miscible. The strong base precipitates silver oxide from the mixture as nano-sized particles, and the precipitate is immediately encapsulated with a surfactant to protect it from further crystal growth and Oswald ripening.
