titleOfInvention | Improved process for producing benzohydrylthioacetamide |
abstract | The present invention is directed to an improved process for producing modafinil. In that process, benzohydryl thioacetate is produced in high yield and purity by reacting haloacetate with the reaction product of thiourea and benzhydrol. The reaction using haloacetate is carried out in a solvent containing an organic base or an organic solvent such as methanol having an inorganic base salt such as sodium bicarbonate dissolved therein. The resulting benzohydryl thioacetate can be amidated and then oxidized to give pharmaceutical grade modafinil in high yield and purity. |
