titleOfInvention | Filterless airbag module |
abstract | A filterless airbag module (10) including a structure for cooling combustion gases. The airbag module (10) includes an inflator (12) having a housing (18) and a smokeless gas generating propellant (20) housed within the housing. One or more openings (24) are formed in the housing (18) to allow fluid communication between the interior of the housing and the exterior of the housing. The airbag (16) is disposed in fluid communication with the opening (24). The combustion gas holder (42) is disposed outside the housing in alignment with the opening (24). The retainer (42) and the surface (72) of the housing (18) combine to define a cooling chamber (50) for cooling the combustion gases received from the housing (18) via the opening (24). . The cooling chamber (59) affects the average residence time of the combustion gas received in the chamber (59), thereby bringing the gas to a temperature within a predetermined temperature range before the gas leaves the cooling chamber (5). The gas is sized so that the gas stays in the cooling chamber (50) for a sufficient length of time to cool. A heat absorbing material may be placed in the cooling chamber (50) to help cool the combustion gases received therein. |
