The present invention relates to the use of the cyclic dinucleotide c-di-GMP and its cyclic dinucleotide analogs in a method of reducing the toxicity of a microbial pathogen or in inhibiting or reducing colonization by a microbial pathogen. The methods of the invention can further inhibit microbial biofilm formation and treat bacterial infections. The microbial colonization or biofilm formation that is inhibited or reduced may be on the skin, or on the nasal or mucosal surface.
