abstract | An ammonium perchlorate-containing gas generant composition that produces or obtains improved effluent upon combustion, and associated methods of generating expanded gas for use in an inflatable restraint system are provided. Such an ammonium perchlorate-containing gas generant composition comprises ammonium perchlorate present in an average particle size greater than 100 μm. Such ammonium perchlorate-containing gas generant composition also includes a chlorine scavenger present in an amount effective to obtain a gaseous effluent substantially free of hydrogen chloride when the gas generant is burned. At least about 98 weight percent of the chlorine scavenger is a copper-containing compound. Suitable copper-containing chlorine scavenger compounds include copper diamine dinitrate-ammonium nitrate mixture, copper diamine bitetrazole, basic copper nitrate, cupric oxide, ammonium nitrate present in the mixture in the range of about 3 to about 90 weight percent, The copper nitrate complex obtained by reaction of 5-aminotetrazole and basic copper nitrate, and those combinations are mentioned. |
