Method and apparatus for purifying air using photocatalyst |
abstract |
The tungsten oxide / titanium dioxide photocatalytic coating oxidizes air pollutants adsorbed on the coating to water, carbon dioxide and other materials. Tungsten oxide forms a monolayer on titanium dioxide. When ultraviolet photons are absorbed by the tungsten oxide / titanium dioxide photocatalytic coating, the electrons are raised from the valence band to the conduction band and holes are generated in the valence band. The holes in the valence band react with water applied on the tungsten oxide / titanium dioxide photocatalytic coating to form reactive hydroxyl radicals. When pollutants in the air are adsorbed on the tungsten oxide / titanium dioxide photocatalyst, hydroxyl radicals act on the pollutants and extract hydrogen atoms from the pollutants. Hydroxyl radicals oxidize pollutants to produce water, carbon dioxide and other substances. Tungsten oxide / titanium dioxide photocatalytic coatings are less sensitive to humidity fluctuations. |
