Disclosed are a substance that specifically inhibits cathepsin E and does not inhibit cathepsin D, which is a lysosomal enzyme highly related to cathepsin E, and a cathepsin E inhibitor. A peptide having an inhibitory action on cathepsin E activity, substantially no inhibitory action on cathepsin D activity, and having 6 to 34 amino acids. A cathepsin E inhibitor containing this peptide as an active ingredient. These were obtained from peptide libraries prepared by molecular manipulation using the In-vitro-virus method.
