Transfectants, such as CHO cells, that express at least the variable heavy and light chain domains of a monoclonal antibody specific for human B7.1 antigen are provided. The present invention expresses a monoclonal antibody selected from the following, which specifically binds to human CD80 antigen and inhibits binding of CD80 antigen to CD28 but does not inhibit binding of CD80 antigen to CTLA-4. Provision of cells: (a) a light chain variable region of monkey monoclonal antibody 7C10 having a specific amino acid sequence and an antibody having a heavy chain variable region of the antibody; (b) a light chain of monkey monoclonal antibody 16C10 having a specific amino acid sequence; An antibody having a variable region and a heavy chain variable region of the antibody; and (c) competing with the antibody of (a) or (b) for binding to the human CD80 antigen, and by the antibody of (a) or (b) An antibody that binds to an epitope of human CD80 antigen that is also bound.
