The present invention provides a novel process for preparing optically active cyclopentenones useful for the preparation of prostaglandins and analogs thereof, and novel cyclopentenones prepared by the process. A racemic mixture containing formula (R) -1 is enantioselectively acylated with lipase to remove unreacted alcohol and then hydrolyzed to obtain an optically active formula (R)- 1 compound is produced.
