abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing 5-halo-2-alkylthio-benzaldehyde, which is useful as an intermediate for synthesis of pharmaceutical raw materials and the like, at low cost and easily in high yield. SOLUTION: General formula (1): (Wherein R represents an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms), and a halogen is reacted in the presence of at least one of a metal and a metal halide. Characteristic general formula (2): (Wherein, R represents the same group as R in the general formula (1), and X 1 represents a halogen atom).
