SOLUTION: A water-based ink composition incorporated in a writing instrument in which a metal nib is arranged at a writing tip, having at least a basic dye, water, a carboxyl group, and having a hydroxyl group. A water-based ink composition for a writing instrument which contains an organic acid having 4 to 6 carbon atoms and the pH of the ink is in the range of 1 to 7, and a metal nib is placed on the writing tip containing the ink.
