abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a benzopyran having a hydroxyl group at the 8-position, such as 3,4-dihydro-8-hydroxy-3-nitroxy-2H-1-benzopyran, which is an important compound as an active ingredient in producing a pharmaceutical product such as nipradilol. A method for producing a compound, which can efficiently produce a high-purity product. The object is to hydrolyze and deprotect a compound having a protecting group at the 8-position of a benzopyran skeleton such as 3,4-dihydro-8-ethoxycarbonyloxy-3-nitroxy-2H-1-benzopyran. A crude product is obtained, and the resulting crude product is brought into contact with an inorganic oxide such as silica gel and activated carbon in an organic solvent to remove impurities contained in the crude product.
