abstract A single fuel addition valve is used to ensure good fuel consumption. An after-treatment device 20 disposed in an exhaust passage of an internal combustion engine has an expansion chamber 22 in an upstream portion, and an exhaust passage at a downstream end of the expansion chamber 22 is connected to a first exhaust passage 24a and a second exhaust passage 24a. Branches to the exhaust passage 24b. The exhaust passages 24a, the inside 24b respectively the NO x storage reduction catalyst 25a, and 25b, the particulate filter 26a, 26b is arranged. For example, the time to release the NO x from the NO x storage reduction catalyst 25a is adding fuel from the fuel addition valve 33 closes the second exhaust passage 24b by the exhaust control valve 28b.
