abstract |
An extremely reliable two-stage inflator is realized. An inflator (10) includes an outer inflator housing (11) forming a pressure vessel (12) for storing stored gas (13) in a first end (10A), a second end (10C) forming a separate combustion chamber (90), and a second end (10C). The intermediate gas diffuser portion 10B is disposed between the first and second end portions 10A and 10C and exhausts gas from the inflator 10 to the airbag. The inflator 10 has a first gas generator subassembly 23 disposed within the first end 10A and in communication with an inert stored gas 13. A second gas generator subassembly 80 is disposed in the second end 10C and is separated from the stored gas 13 by one or more destructible rupturable plates 24A, 24B, 24C.
