To provide a water-based lithium secondary battery excellent in durability, in which the battery capacity does not easily decrease even when used for a long period of time, and the battery resistance does not easily increase. A positive electrode 2 formed by binding a positive electrode mixture 25 to a positive electrode current collector 21, a negative electrode 3 formed by binding a negative electrode mixture 35 to a negative electrode current collector 31, and an aqueous electrolyte. This is a water based lithium secondary battery 1. The positive electrode mixture 2 contains a positive electrode active material 251 made of a lithium-containing composite oxide, a conductive agent 253 made of a carbon-based material, and a binder 255. The negative electrode mixture 35 contains a negative electrode active material 351 made of a complex oxide having a lower lithium insertion and desorption potential than the positive electrode active material 251, a conductive agent 353 made of a carbon-based material, and a binder 355. At least one of the positive electrode active material 251 and the negative electrode active material 351 is coated with 0.01 to 20 parts by weight of a coupling agent 252 (352) having a hydrolyzable group and a hydrophobic group with respect to 100 parts by weight of the active material. ing.
