PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a sufficient buffer capacity even at a high output operation when an enzyme is immobilized on at least one of a positive electrode and a negative electrode, and to fully exhibit the ability inherent to the enzyme. A fuel cell having excellent performance is provided. A fuel cell having a structure in which a positive electrode 2 and a negative electrode 1 are opposed to each other with an electrolyte layer 3 containing a buffer substance, and an enzyme is immobilized as a catalyst on at least one of the positive electrode 2 and the negative electrode 1. At least the concentration of the buffer substance contained in the electrolyte layer 3 around the enzyme is 0.2 M or more and 2.5 M or less, preferably 0.4 M or more and 2 M or less. The enzyme immobilized on the negative electrode 1 is diaphorase or glucose dehydrogenase, and the enzyme immobilized on the positive electrode 2 is bilirubin oxidase. NaH 2 PO 4 or the like is used as a buffer substance, and glucose or the like is used as a fuel. [Selection] Figure 1 |
