abstract |
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an artificial implant installed in a space between vertebrae left after removing a damaged spinal disc. An interbody fusion device includes a load support that defines a hollow interior or chamber that houses osteogenic material. Or formed from a porous biocompatible material with a tapered body that is solid and has sufficient structural integrity to maintain the disc space and normal curvature. The The material is preferably a porous tantalum composite that has fully interconnected pores to facilitate complete bone ingrowth into the implant. A cap is provided to close the opening of the hollow fixation device 10. The cap includes an occlusion body and an elongated anchor. The anchor includes a lip that is engageable with the opening 24 in the body wall. A tool is provided for operating the cap of the interbody fusion device.
