abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel side chain type liquid crystal polymer and side chain type liquid crystal elastomer having polysiloxane as a main chain and having a wide liquid crystal temperature range, and a mesogen having a vinyl group used for the production thereof. SOLUTION: The mesogen has the following general formula: (In the above formula, R 1 represents an alkylene group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms or a partially modified group thereof, and Ar represents an aryl group which may have a substituent), (1) The chain length of R 1 is 3 or more, and (2) Ar contains two or more aromatic rings. The liquid crystal polymer is obtained by a hydrosilylation reaction between the mesogen and a polysiloxane having a Si—H bond. The liquid crystal elastomer is obtained by a hydrosilylation reaction between the mesogen and a crosslinking agent that is a compound having two or more vinyl groups and a polysiloxane having a Si—H bond.
