A method and composition for producing a substrate having a satin-like surface is provided. Compositions and methods are provided for producing metal substrates having a uniform textured surface with a plurality of indentations having nanometer and micrometer internal diameters. The satin surface is formed by exposing the substrate to an etching solution containing hydrohalic acid, a mixture of hydrohalic acid and oxyacid, a chlorine-containing compound, and an oxidizing agent. The etchant can be used at ambient temperature. The satin-like surface improves the adhesion of the coating or cells on the satin-like surface, improves the protein retention on the surface, and improves bone growth. [Selection] Figure 1 |
