It is advantageous to have amino acids that are useful in the synthesis of pharmaceutically active agents. There is a need for a new process at a reasonable cost for 2-methylcysteine, a precursor of desferrithiocin and related compounds, that has advantages in iron chelation therapy in subjects with ion overload disease Yes. The present invention provides a process for preparing 2-alkylcysteine derivatives, many of which can be performed stereoselectively. The present invention also discloses a process for the preparation of a class of ion chelators for desferrithiocin, all of which contain a thiazoline ring, examples of these ion chelators being 4,5-dihydro-2- (2, 4,5-dihydro-2- (2,4-dihydroxyphenyl) -4-alkyl-thiazole-4-carboxylic acid such as 4-dihydroxyphenyl) -4-methyl-thiazole-4-carboxylic acid.
