abstract | A bimetallic catalyst comprising a modified Ziegler-Natta catalyst and a metallocene, and a process for producing the bimetallic catalyst are provided, which in one embodiment comprises (a) a Group 4, 5 or 6 metal halide and / or oxidation. A Ziegler-Natta catalyst comprising a compound and optionally a magnesium compound and (b) a modifier compound ("modifier"), wherein the modifier compound is a Group 13 alkyl compound Forming a modified Ziegler-Natta catalyst. An olefin polymerization method using the bimetallic catalyst of the present invention is also provided. The modified Ziegler-Natta catalyst is preferably deactivated, i.e., alone, inert to olefin polymerization. In one embodiment, the molar ratio of Group 13 metal (of the modifier) to Group 4, 5 or 6 metal halide and / or oxide is less than (10: 1). The bimetallic catalyst of the present invention is useful for producing bimodal polymers (especially bimodal polyethylene) having a polydispersity (Mw / Mn) of 12-50. These bimodal polyolefins are useful in articles such as pipes and films. |
