abstract The present invention is not limited to phosphorus-substituted compounds having antiviral activity, compositions containing such compounds, and therapeutic methods (including the step of administering such compounds) as well as such compounds. Relates to processes and intermediates useful for preparing. The present invention provides novel phosphonate-containing analogs of antiviral compounds. These analogs have all of the utility of their parent compounds and, if necessary, provide cellular accumulation as described below. The compounds of the present invention may inhibit retroviral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase or reverse transcriptase and thus prevent viral replication. The compounds of the present invention may be useful for treating patients infected with human retroviruses (eg, hepatitis C virus).
