abstract | A composite utility blade and method of manufacturing such a blade (10) includes butt welding a high speed steel or tool steel wire (44) to the front end of an alloy steel peak member strip (34). The wire (44) has a predetermined cross-sectional shape that substantially corresponds to the cross-sectional shape of the cutting edge (14) of the blade (10). A wire (44) is electron beam welded to the ridge strip (34) and formed from a first metal portion (20) formed of an alloy steel ridge strip (34) and a high speed steel or tool steel wire (44). A composite strip (46) is formed comprising the second metal portion (22) formed and a weld zone (28) joining the first and second metal portions (20, 22). The cutting edge (14) may be provided with an AlTiN coating, a TiN coating, or an inner layer coating of AlTiN and an outer layer coating of TiN. |
