abstract | The present invention relates to methods and compositions that enhance the treatment of cancer and other proliferative diseases. In certain embodiments, the present invention combines administration of an agent that inhibits the anti-apoptotic activity of galectin-3 (eg, a “galectin-3 inhibitor”) to enhance the toxicity of the chemotherapeutic agent. In some preferred embodiments, the combination therapies of the invention can be used to improve the effectiveness of chemotherapeutic agents whose cytotoxicity is affected by the status of the anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 protein in the cell being treated. For example, a galectin-3 inhibitor can be administered in combination with a chemotherapeutic agent that interferes with the accuracy of DNA replication or cell cycle progression of cells undergoing unwanted proliferation. |
