abstract | In mammals with type 2 diabetes to help prevent β-cell death, to prevent β-cell function, to prevent glucose tolerance and to treat early and late diabetes in mammals A method for treating current levels of glycemic control dysfunction in a mammal with reduced glucose tolerance or diabetes to prevent the development of overt diabetes, which facilitates the absorption of insulin and insulin from the gastrointestinal tract Said method comprising orally administering the delivery substance to be delivered at or immediately before meal time, eg, within about 10 minutes prior to ingestion of the meal, over an extended period of time. The method also includes administering a fast acting insulin that provides a second insulin peak that occurs later but has a longer duration in addition to administering a fast acting insulin that provides the first insulin peak. These methods achieve improved glycemic control without the risk of hypoglycemia, hyperinsulinemia and weight gain, and without the frequent glycemic monitoring normally associated with insulin therapy. |
