abstract |
The bicycle wheel (10) includes a tire engaging portion (34) located on the outer periphery of the wheel (10), and an inner portion (26) located radially inward from the tire engaging portion (34). A pair of air engaging side surfaces (20, 22) extends between the inner portion (36) and the tire engaging portion (34) to form both side surfaces of the wheel (10). The air engaging sides (20, 22) include a plurality of surface structures (44) designed to create a turbulent boundary layer to reduce the aerodynamic drag of the wheel (10) as the wheel cuts air. . |
